It's best to treat the O2 sensor as just another part that has to be replaced during a tune-up. Generally we don't wait for a spark plug to go bad before we replace it, when the vehicle needs a tune-up we replace them all. Follow the manufacturers recommended interval for replacing the oxygen sensor.

It is a Throttle Position Sensor
On 3.2L v6 it's located by right motor mount in block, easiest to find from underneath.
