Australia is a very modern country, so people make livings much like people do in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and so on. Most of the population is focused on the east coast in large and densely populated cities such as Canberra, Melbourne, Newcastle, Sydney, and Brisbane. In these cities, where most of the population lives, common occupations are in construction, insurance, food processing, education, public health, legal services, financial services, information technology, and other tertiary employments. In the western area of the country, the land is dominated by a large arid area known the Outback. In these areas, employment is almost exclusively in mining which accounts for 10% of Australia's GDP and farming.
