Make sure you understand the safe use of a jack and jack stands before you start work.

  1. Loosen the lug nuts on both rear wheels 1 full turn.
  2. Raise the rear of the vehicle until both rear wheels are clear of the ground. Place one jack stand on each side of the rear axle housing close to where the lower shock absorber mount is located. Lower the vehicle until it is resting fully on the jack stands. Both rear wheels should be clear of the ground. You should be able to push hard against the side of the truck without causing it to rock or slide on the jack stands.
  3. Remove the rear wheels and brake drums.
  4. Either remove the brake shoes or cover them with plastic so that gear lube will not contaminate them when the axle is pulled. If the shoes are removed wrap something around the wheel cylinder so it does not get damaged.
  5. Place a large pan under the differential where the cover is bolted on.
  6. Remove all of the bolts from the differential cover. You can push up on the brake lines to get them out of the way but do not kink them. If the brake lines look rusty or if the brake hose looks worn then now is a good time to install new ones.
  7. Pry the differential cover off slowly starting at the bottom. Stop when oil begins to leak out and let it drain.
  8. Rotate the differential until you see the head of the bolt which is holding the pinion shaft in. It will be on the passenger side of the carrier. The head is 8 mm. Use a 6-point box end wrench or socket to remove it. It was installed with loctite on the threads and will be very hard to turn at first.
  9. With the pinion shaft bolt out but the pinion shaft still fully installed rotate the carrier until the passage for the top of the pinion shaft is at the highest point it can be while still allowing enough clearance for removal of the pinion shaft.
  10. Slide the pinion shaft out, being careful not to rotate the carrier.
  11. Push the lug stud end of the axle shaft towards the center of the vehicle being careful not to rotate the carrier. When you have pushed it far enough, a U shaped keeper should fall off the end.
  12. Pull the axle shaft straight out. It helps to have a shop rag handy that you can run along the shaft as you pull it so oil does not drip all over.
  13. Put the pinion shaft back in and loosely install the retainer bolt.
