To tell if your engine is a 2 bolt main or a 4 bolt main. Turn the engine upside down on an engine stand. Next, count the number of bolts on each main bearing cap. if there are two, then its a 2 bolt main. And if there are4, then its a 4 bolt main.

This applies to the three center caps. The front and rear are always 2 bolt.

1969 360 FE motor have a two bolt main or four bolt main?

It should be a 2 bolt main, but without looking at the engine I can't say for sure. if it's a 4-bolt main, it should be cross-bolted and you can tell that without dropping the oil pan.

How do you tell a 4 bolt main Chevy 350?

The main bearing caps will have four ( 4 ) bolts instead of two ( 2 ) they will be side by side. A four bolt 350 engine is more common in the bigger truck series ?

How can you tell if a 427 1969 covette engine is a two or four bolt main?

The only way to know for sure is to remove the oil pan and look. In reality, I'm pretty sure all of the 427's used in Corvettes were 4 bolt.

Are all 1970 Pontiac 455's 4 bolt main?

No, nearly all 1970 455s are drilled for four bolt mains, but fitted with two bolt caps. Only a few high performance models actually got the four bolt caps from the factory.

How much does it cost converting a two bolt main engine to a four bolt main?

Call your local machine shop....only they can tell you their price to drill and tap the block. You'll also have the cost of the 4 bolt main caps, bolts or studs, and to align hone the block with the new caps. Unless you are planning on turning 6,000 RPM plus on a regular basis you really don't need 4 bolt mains on a street vehicle.

How does one determine whether an engine is a 2 bolt main or a 4 bolt main?

with oil pan off, look at your main bearings on your crank shaft, the cover of the bearing will have one bolt on each side this is two bolt main or two on each side this is four bolt mainAnswerTo tell if a motor has 2 bolt or 4 bolt main caps, you must remove the oil pan and inspect the main bearing caps for the crankshaft. If 2 bolts are present, it's a 2 bolt motor and if 4 bolts per cap are present, it's a 4 bolt motor. Most truck engines are 4 bolt - most low perf car engines are 2 bolt - this isn't always the case, but a good place to start if you're hunting for a particular engine.this is a inboard marine engine still working impossible to remove pan without removing engine . That's why the s\n

What is a 4 bolt main look like?

All it means is that the main web that holds the crankshaft in have four bolts instead of two per main. A four bolt main was used in high performance and heavy duty applications. Personally, I've been into many, many engines and I've never seen a main break at the bolts. Gas or diesel. I have seen cranks snap like twigs.

Can you upgrade a two bolt main to a four bolt main?

Yes you can. It's a fairly expensive process which requires complete disassembly of the engine so that the block can be presented to a machine shop. Consult a professional to see if this is a cost effective upgrade for your application.
