When Colombus was exploring, he thought he could travel sround the world to India or the Spice isles in Indonesia. However he ran into the Bahamas, and the antilles, he thought he had landed at India, so therefore calling it "Indies" and West since he traveled in that direction. the term "indians" for the natives came from him thinking that the natives were Indians from India.
