On one of my friends suggestion, I placed hydtraulic jack under the oil pan placing a 2x6 wood piece on top of jack to avoid damaging the pan. Then I raised the engine very gently to make enough room to remove the palstic cover. I did NOT remove any engine mount bolts. It worked and I saved over $100 by not making a trip to a mechanic. Remove the starter. the solenoid is mounted on the starter.
The Starter is not easy to change. First thing " Disconnect the battery". The starter is under the intake manifold and bolts into the transmission. You need to remove the intake and all related hoses and plastic parts as well as the hard plastic cooling pipe that basically sits above the starter. There are 2 bolts that hold it in and one is easy to get at and the other is a bit more difficult.

To remove the starter: 1. Disconnect positive (red) cable on battery 2. Remove flywheel cover at starter. It's plastic, and you can break it, so be careful. If I remember right, there are three bolts holding it on. 3. Disconnect the cable(s) from the starter. 4. Remove the starter bolts. I think there are three. Don't remember the sizes, it's been a couple of years. 5. Drop the starter out and take it to your local parts house and have it tested before you buy another. Just a note or two - If your starter works on the test rack, but you can smell it running (sharp, acrid, burning, or smells of ozone), get a new one. It may work if you put it back on like that, but it won't for long. Hope this helps.
