the timing on the 5.7s isn't critical. there is a line in both the pump and the atatchment plate. if the heads have been shaved you will find that if you line those 2 marks up it will be hard to start, blow white smoke on startup, and knock. move the pump to the right 60 thou if your standing in front of the motor, and u will find it will start and run better. hope that helps

Well i had anpontiac bonniville with a 5.7 d for ten years and 5 injector pump rebuilds and 2 engines later i can tell you lots of things as one of my friends used to work on them the injectore pump has timing lines set from the factory but over time or rebuid there not always accurate Oldsmobile came out with a cylider timing lite which you could reset the timing as the lines may nit be accurate but to find a mechanic or garage that still has the tool might be difficult to find sice olds brand no longer in existence and engines very rare now but be wary as it s the only true way to set your timing had to have mine redone evey 2 to 3 years as internal wear would take it out of timing {injector pump ]

If you are referring to ignition timing, diesel ignition timing is primarily controlled by the injector timing. This is also why diesel engines run such high injector pressures. The timing is very carefully controlled by the vehicles computer.

There is no "fuel pump timing". If you mean injector pump timing, that requires special equipment not generally available to the home mechanic.

There is no ignition timing to set on a diesel. If you have somehow disturbed the injector timing you'll have to take it to a dealer, as setting that requires special equipment.

there are many models of injection systems. However in the common Bosch system using injection lines and nozzles, you rotate the pump in respect to the crankshaft or camshaft position. This advances or retards the timing depending upon the direction the pump is rotated.

the camshaft timing will cause the late injection process
