Backing up your computer's files means: copying them onto some other device (floppy disk, CD Rom, or jump drive). This is obviously done in case something happens to the computer's non-removable disk.

Standard procedure used to be to make a backup disk, but now there are services like that let you store 2-3GB of files online in a secure cloud that you can sync, edit, and share with others and easily access with your login information from any computer, mobile device, or other internet source.

Why to create a backup file in your computer??

If you are going to create a backup file, you should put it on an external hard disk or USB. If you have a file in your computer with a backup file and your computer burns, they will both disappear

If you have any writable disks, then insert them into the disk drive, making sure that the drive is connected to the computer and is working properly. Then, drag the files you want to back up from your computer, to the disk. If it is a disk like a CD, then you have to burn it. Once you are done, take the disk out. If you don't want the files on your computer at the time, then just delete them of of your computer.

In short... copy it to elsewhere.

For creating a backup, you need a removable drive [atleast of 4 GB] or a DVD disc

Backing up your PC depends on what O/S you are using.

You may purchase a new backup disc or drive.

Or

You may create a backup online.

Copy the file you want to back up on to a external storage device such as an external harddrive or memory stick. You can also put the file onto another persons computer, either by emailling it to them or buy transferring it from an external storage device.
