According to the 1997 Ford Aerostar Owner Guide : ( Motorcraft MERCON automatic transmission fluid is used as the power steering fluid )
no
Yes, automatic transmission fluid is the proper fluid for power steering systems. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ( MERCON ) automatic transmission fluid in a 1997 Ford Aerostar power steering
I checked Chilton's and Haynes manuals and they both say to use Type F Automatic transmission fluid for the power steering.
There are multiple methods to purging power steering systems of old fluid. In this application one do it yourself method requires the use of a turkey baster and container for used fluid. Using the baster old fluid can be sucked out of the power steering reservoir. Once emptied it can be filled with fresh fluid. Doing this procedure will extract much but not all of the old fluid. Another option is disconnecting all the lines and letting the system drain, and then recharging.
You don't bleed power steering fluid. Raise the front of the car, start the engine, turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock 3 times to get the air out of the system. Make sure to use axle stands and block the wheels so you can do this safely.
Worn steering rack? Bad power steering pump? Low P.S. fluid? Worn steering components? Low tire pressure?
Power steering fluid? loosen fill cap turn wheels lock-to-lock 6-10 times check fluid level secure cap
It means that you have air in the steering rack. You need to bleed it properly.
how do I bleed my power steering pete thank you
To the power steering pump reservoir located on the drivers side of the engine near the front of the engine . It will have a cap that has a little plastic dipstick on the bottom of the cap
