There no adjustments possible to the transmission, the only thing that you can adjust on a manual transmission type is the clutch pedal height. If the transmission is not functioning properly, you might have to get a professional to check it out. There are many questions to ask about this. How long since your last clutch changeout, have you checked the clutch master cylinder operation, how about the slave master cylinder, are all the hoses intact, no leaks, no clogs, last time you changed the Brake fluid(you do know that it is shared with the transmission)? I could go on!

I just did this twice.

Put the car up on jack stands, you will want lots of room to move around underneath.

Disconnect the battery. You won't be messing with electrical stuff, but it is always a good safety precaution.

Go under the dash and pull the clutch up towards you as far as it will go to release the self-adjusting mechanism. Reach up and disconnect the cable from the quadrant. It is not clipped or pinned in, it will just slip right off the hook.

Pop the hood, and remove the cable bracket from the firewall using a 5MM socket or wrench on the screws.

Pull the cable free of the firewall.

Use a 8MM socket to remove the bolt holding the cable bracket to the fender.

Crawl under the car or use a caster to slide under to the transmission, and remove the small bell housing using a 3/8 socket (1 bolt).

Disconnect the cable from the clutch fork by sliding it up the groove and out the larger hole.

Using a small screwdriver, carefully pry the C-clip off the nylon bushing on the cable where it runs through the hole in the transmission mount.

Thread the old cable out and up through the engine bay. **NOTICE THE PATH THE OLD CABLE TAKES THROUGH THE ENGINE BAY**

Take the fender bracket off the old cable by prying it gently until you can slip it off the old cable, and put it on the new one in the same direction, crimping it down so it won't come out, but can still wiggle a bit.

Thread the new cable in the same way you took the old one out, being careful not to kink or twist the cable too much (they are pretty sturdy anyway).

Re-attach the brackets at the firewall and fender.

Reconnect the C-clip, and slide the cable through the clutch fork and into it's socket.

Before bolting up the bell housing, make sure you can attach the cable to the quadrant in the car. If not, remove the cable from the clutch fork, attach it at the quadrant, and use a pry bar to pull the clutch fork forward so you can pull the end through the large hole, the slot and into the socket.

Depress the pedal and make sure the self-adjusting mechanism ratchets into place.

Reconnect the battery, start the car, make sure the clutch engages correctly, then bolt up the bell housing.

You are done!

First you will want to remove the cable from the upper control assembly, get the proper amount of primary oil, and drain the primary. Remove the primary bolts and pull the cover off. Once the cover is removed you will see where the cable routes and will be able to remove it.

Does the thermostat need replaced on a 1999 Ford Escort ZX2?

I have a 2000 zx2 and it has a thermostat, if that is your question. Having said that, my heater quit working and it turned out to be the cable came loose under the dash on the left side of the radio. At first I thought it was the thermostat but was wrong. Duct taped the cable in place and the control and heater started working fine again.
