Most General Motors vehicles are pretty generic. It should be located with or very close to the thermostat housing on the front of the motor above the water pump. It will screw out and in as a unit just take your time and watch your threading.

The low side ac port on a 1997 Pontiac Firebird should be located on a hose on the passenger side. The hose is close to the radiator.

In answer to your question the coolant temperature sensor on a 2000 Pontiac grand am with a 3.4L engine, is located on the rear of the engine above the flywheel. It is located just behind the what I believe is the alternator.
