I just spent the last 2 weekends trying to do this. My installed gasket was pushing itself out at the front of the engine under the camshaft. I jacked up the engine as far as possible, and the pan wouldn't come out - the only way of doing it (3 friends and I all agree on this) is to pull the engine. A Ford dealership quoted me $800 to change the gasket out. Good luck

The 1999 Ford Ranger 3.0L oil pan is removable by unhooking the motor mounts and jacking the engine. If it is not DIS ignition, you may need to remove the distributor so it doesn't get damaged during lift. Remove right side brake caliper, axle I-beam and starter. Engine needs to be lifted 2 inches and pan will just clear the frame and the oil pump.
The 1999 Ford Ranger 4.0L oil pan requires the engine to be removed in order to service the oil pan.
