Disconnect the cable from the back of the speedometer housing by unscrewing it from the speedometer, then loosen the Phillips head screw located on the speedometer gear housing located at the front wheel hub (where the axle goes through the wheel). Back it completely out and that end of the cable can be pulled down and out of the housing. If you are needing to replace the speedometer inside cable that actually works the speedometer, you will have to push the inner cable from the end that connects to the speedometer which will push the other end out of the cable housing, you can't push the cable through from the gear box housing because of the attachment on that end will not go through that direction. If the inner cable is twisted off, you have to push something down the speedometer end until you can take a pair of needle nosed pliers to pull the cable out of the gear box end. It's a simple matter to reverse the operation when installing a new inner cable. Good luck.

P.S.
I just recently performed this operation on my own bike, but my problem ended up being a broken plastic sprocket located inside the actual speedometer gear housing which I can't find on the internet.
dgw2jr: Also performed this operation on my V65. The part number for the broken plastic speedometer gear is 44806-MB0-003. Can be ordered online (http://partsfinder.onlinemicrofiche.com/wps/Honda_OEM/HondaMC.asp?Type=13&A=29&B=36) or at your local Honda Powersports dealer.

If a 1992 Honda Civic's speedometer is erratic, the problem could be the speedometer cable. It could also be the speedometer sensor malfunctioning. Check both components carefully.
