You have to get to it from inside the truck. It is behind the glove box but you can only get to it from under the dash. After you have located it you just unbolt it and then put the new one on.
heater core is in back of the glove box
To change the heater core in a 87 ford f150 is easy. Just remove the glove box and then behind it there is 7 bolts. After you remove the 7 bolts then just remove the cover and behind it is the heater core. By far the easiest heater core I ever changed.
Remove the inside cover of your glove box, 4 or 5 screws, then you will be at heater core cover, remove 7 screws from cover, and if you have disconnected your heater hoses, the heater core will pull right out. Just did mine thanksgiving day. 20 minute job
To change out the heater-core in a 1986 F-150, you must access the old heater-core through the glove box. You must remove the glove box by removing the screws that hold it in. Once this is accomplished, you must loosen the clamps on the hoses that are connected to the old heater-core unit. Then remove the hoses from the old heater-core and slide the old heater-core out through the opening where the glove box use to be. Install the new one using these instructions in reverse! Presto...installed! Mechanic Man
Bolt the heater core into its proper position. There are four retaining bolts. Connect the water lines to the heater core. Fill the cooling system with coolant.
you dont!you just connect both the hoses together.and wear a gloves hat and a heavy jacket!
The heater core is located in the dash ,or should I say in the heater /ac plenum if you chase out the heater hoses from under the hood you'll get a general idea where it is located.

First, be certain it actually is in your heater core. A heater core doesn't have any moving parts, so if there's a noise coming from it, then it's probably from physical damage or a puncture, and it'll have to be replaced.
