Well let me say your going to have to drop the steering wheel to get to the switch. The actual switch is on top of the steering column. There is a steel rod that comes from your ignition down to it. Unhook that. Then unbolt the switch and replace. One thing I forgot to mention. When you drop the steering wheel, don't take it out of the fire wall. Just unbolt the cradel that holds it in place and let it rest on the seat. If your steering wheel doesn't come down far enough, put something on the seat to rest it on. GOOD LUCK! Ethan Tegtmeier.15 year old. I had to drop mine to get to my switch on my truck.

You're going to have to unbolt the steering column and drop it down. The ignition switch will be on the top of the column along with your high beam switch. Unbolt the switch then unplug it.

The 1985 Chevrolet El Camino ignition switch can be removed by loosening the retaining ring at the top of the switch. The switch will slide out. Remove the wiring harness from the back of the ignition switch.
