Start the bike and let it warm to operating temperature. (I ride mine about a mile or so)
Shut the bike off. Remove the dipstick. Place a shallow oil pan (must hold three quarts) underneath the skid plate and line it up with the oil drain plug. This is the plug on the shifter side of the bike directly below that side of the oil tank. Remove the plug to drain the oil into the pan. while it is draining, clean any metal particles off of the magnetic tip on the plug and replace the "O" ring. Set the plug aside on a clean rag or on a clean sheet of cardboard. Be careful not to burn yourself. Everything will be quite hot. Next, with the proper Harley filter wrench 9 (PART # 16066044) line up the relief cut with the crank sensor and break the oil filter loose but DO NOT UN-TIGHTEN. Remove the wrench and finish removing the filter by hand. Open your new filter and coat the rubber gasket with new oil. Fill the oil filter to three quarters full with new oil. Install the new filter BY HAND, snug the filter and give one turn until hand tight. At this point, all the old oil should be drained. Install the new plug with the new oil ring and tighten hand tight then one full turn with a wrench. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN or it will leak. Fill the oil through the dipstick hole, it should hold a little more than 3 quarts since you filled the filter first. You should also remove and clean your tappet screen. This is the large screw in cap on the break side of the bike right by the tappet block. I just replace mine every two oil changes but if you choose to clean it, remove the screw the screen will come out. In a cardboard lid, use carburetor cleaner to spray the screen until clean. If the screen is damaged make sure to replace it. Do not run the engine without the screen in place.
That's all their is to it.
FXDL
looking underneath the bike; it is the plug on the shifter side of the bike.
It is actually FXDL. Motor Vehicle Departments shorten it to FDL for some reason. A FXDL is a Dyna Low Rider. I bought a 1994 FXDL today.

Harley recommends an oil and filter change every 5000 miles. Most riders change more frequently. I change mine every 3000 miles.
