First make sure fuses are o.k.,remove trim bezel from in front of radio/dash area.Unscrew dash cluster, pull forward enough to disconnect speedo cable(or discon. from counter box under hood).Unplug enough to tilt down speedo clstr, remove bulbs.
The running lights are inside the light unit, the unit is held in with two screws and simply slides into position. To access the light unit, open the back hatch, and pull the interior away from the top edge of the back wall of the trunk just enough to gain access to the screws along the top edge of the unit. Once removed slide the whole light unit sideways, away from the center line of the car. From there you will see the lights held in the plastic unit with rubber 1/2 turn standard clips.
I disagree with the other poster, changing the lights is rather simple in my opinion. You access the light bundle from within the trunk. There are two access panels, on the left it will be your "Roadside Safety" space, on the right, a much smaller but similarly locking panel. Open these to reveal the lighting bundles. There are pinch tabs on either side of the light bundle. Pinch and remove. Check for burned bulbs or loose connections.
The exact bulb number is printed on the reverse side of the plastic, write that down and take it to an auto parts store. Remember to always use proper precautions when working with electricity, disconnecting the battery when necessary. I hope I was able to answer this before you pay someone to do it for you. The steps should be roughly the same for any Golf, Jetta, or Passat in the A4 line (99.5-05) and the new Beetles.
:: if both bulbs are ok, and the fuse is not blown, it may be the reverse lamp sensor switch on top of the transmission
AnswerI believe that changing the lights on a Jetta are pretty difficult compared to other cars. Your best bet is to go to a Volkswagen dealer. It depends. When you put your signal on do you get just a solid arrow on your dash? If so, I had the same problem and after numerous repairs and lots of money, I replaced the fuse in the emergency flasher. It pops out with a flathead screwdriver and simply unplugs. Its called a Hazard Switch Relay and cost me about $60 at the Dealers.

to remove the head light unit on a 2000+ vehicle, you need to remove the front bumper before the headlight will come out
on the black plastic dash around the clocks are 6 screws, remove them and pull out the heater slider covers, lift thr whole dash panal up and remove the speedo cable, you should now be able to see all the bulb holders in the back of the gauges.
To adjust the headlights on a 1998 Volkswagen Jetta, use the vertical adjustment screw located off the top of the headlight compartment. There is also a lateral adjustment screw within the Jetta's headlight housing unit.
Under the rear bumber on the left and right side there are two hand sized holes reach in and twist the bulb holder out of it's socket replace bulb and put it back. "it only twists one way"
Remove old lights and install new ones. Use small hands.
