Take the intake tube off the intake plenum/mass air flow sensor box and put it out of the way. Then remove the two bolts that hold the plate on top of the valve cover off which will expose the coil packs. Unplug the coil packs very carefully and then gently pull straight up on each coil and the plugs will be exposed. ou will need a 10" extension to reach all the way down in the tube to get the plugs out. BE VERY CAREFUL HERE AND ONLY DO THIS WHEN THE ENGINE IS COLD, DO NOT DO IT WHEN THE ENGINE IS EVEN SLIGHTLY WARM, COLD, COLD, COLD! You SHOULD replace the spark plug boots when you replace the spark plugs. The boots are the rubber parts that are attached to the coil packs that cover the the top of the spark plugs. This should be done as the extreme conditions these rubber part endure cause them to weaken and when they are pulled out they sometimes get a small pinhole in them and then the spark is sent out the pinhole to the spark plug tube and you will have a rough idle, low performance and likely a check engine light. When reinstalling the coil packs press them down firmly and sort of "wiggle" them down till they are seated firmly on the plug. Use an ANTI-SEIZE on the spark plugs so that they will not get stuck in the heads which will cause expensive damage to the headss the next time you want to replace the plugs. Carefully clean the top of the valve covers where the plates that go over the coil packs come into contact with the valve covers and make sure that the gaskets on the plates are clean and still pliable....The rear of each plate has a half round opening to allow the wire harness for the coil packs to come through. Pay close attention to this area upon reinstallation so that they seal properly around the wire harnesses.

Because spark plugs on many newer cars are so hard to get at you want them to last as long as possible. You can replace them with standard plugs but if they only last half as long, the labor involved makes that a poor value. I would stick to the platinum plugs. I hope this helps you. The spark plugs are under the intake manifold aka upper plenum ,in the center of the valve cover gaskets , on a 1997 Catera. Unplug the hoses and electrical wire clip/connections (you may want to mark the 4 hoses in the back for reattachment at removal), unbolt the intake manifold or aka upper plenum , you will then see the wires that go into the center of the valve covers , pull the plug boot and you can access the spark plugs. usually boots and wires covered in oil recommend replacement of valve cover gaskets at the same time. If covered in oil replacement of spark plug wires isa must.

30,000 miles is recommended for spark plug replacement on all Chrysler/Jeep vehicles, not just the Jeep Liberty. Not only are plugs recommended at 30,000 miles, shock absorbers are recommended as well. As a mechanic for the Chrysler/Jeep Corp., i can say with confidence that it is not entirely necessary to change plugs and shocks at the 30k mile mark. Basically, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" (however, i do recommend at least checking the plugs at 30,000 miles)

I used Autolite spark plugs in my Mark VII. Autolite is the retail version of the factory Ford part. Same as ACDelco and GM. Im sure you've seen tons of different plugs out there and some of them are great I like at bosch platinum plugs but they are a waist of money unless 1) your car came with platinum plugs 2) You have or are planning ignition system upgrades. But for a stock car use factory plugs. Also make sure the plugs are gapped correctly. Even pre-gapped plugs, Ive seen pre gapped plugs almost .015 off the gap.

If you mean in the valleys when you look down and there is oil around the spark plugs then it's the o rings in the valve covers that need replacing. Removing the passenger cover isn't too bad but the driver's side is a pain.
