98 outback how to change plugsTools needed are plug socket short extension and ratchet.Remove the rubber plug inside the socket before you start or you will have a possible rough time removing socket from plug.Get under the car it is very easy down there put socket extention and ratchet under car.Put fingers behind large ears on plugs and pull.you have to put the tools to the plug one piece at a time for the clearance put on socket to plug put in ext then ratchet. loosen about 4 turns remove ratchet loosen a little more with fingers by turning ext remove it the finally socket will be out far enough to do it in same manner.Spend the dollar and use antisieze on theads.to prevent plug from siezing in aluminum head in future. Also without giving a plug recommendation plug for aluminum heads,Good plugs have a nickle coating to aid in future plugs from siezing in hole.Gap is 39 to 44 since plug gaps get larger with age gap to 39 reinstall in same manner as removal

I have 2000 Subaru legacy L which I think it got the same engine as 98 legacy outback and I just changed the spark plugs last week. Two spark plugs are located on each side of the engine block if you look from above. The easiest way to do it for the right side is first remove the battery completely and lift up(not removed) the washing fluid reservoir slightly above(you don't need to disconnect the wire). This way, you'll get the access to the spark plug rubber covers. The other two plugs are on the left side(passenger side). In order to get to them, you need to remove the air intake manifold completely and it's connections. Don't worry, they are easy to do and they are all made of plastic. Remove all the plastic air connections until you can see the rubber covers for the spark plugs. And use the tool already described earlier to get them out. It took me about 15-20 minutes to put the new ones on.

Check the distributor cap for excessive wear, also check your "wires." The easiest and cheapest thing is to change out both, it is probably time. Throw some new plugs in also.

How do you change the spark plugs on a 1999 Subaru Legacy Outback?

For the LH side remove the screen washer bottle (two screws and two hoses). For the RH side remove the air inlet ducting (two screws on the radiator crossmember, a bolt and a nut secure the rest of the ducting). Remove the plug leads by pulling on the lugs, not the cable. The plugs are best removed using a 3/8" drive 5/8" (16mm) spark plug socket on a 6" (150mm) extension, and a ratchet.
