drain the Transmission Fluid from the bolt on the pan underneath.Remove the pan itself and you will see the filter.

Your 90 Ford Tempo may die when you put it in drive or reverse because the fuel filter is clogged. The transmission could also be malfunctioning.
On my wife's 1993 Ford Tempo,when you remove the transmiision pan(after draining fluid), the filter can be seen just inside. It looks like a bag and has a female end which slips over whatever the part is called that it is attached to.
