I haven't seen this particular vehicle but there is a drain plug on all Subaru automatics. Transmission has a flat pan with a drain plug on the driver's side under the car just about as far back as the driver's feet. Just like changing engine oil, you pull the plug and drain everything that runs out, should be around 4 quarts. Refill with fresh Dexron III and recycle the old fluid. Buy one of those funnels with a hose on it when you buy the transmission fluid. This doesn't change all of the Transmission Fluid, but it is enough to put in some fresh seal conditioners and remove some of the fine particles caused by wear. Dipstick/filler is back near the firewall in the engine compartment on the driver's side and it is down low under some hoses. Yellow handle. Be careful to not overfill and change fluid every year for longest transmission life.

How do you check the transmission fluid level on subaru forester?

I want to check the level of atf temp in my subaru forester 2010. On checking the transmission fluid level, after the car was driven about 10 km and was put in each gear and setting the select level in the "p", do i have to turn off the engine or idle the engine before i check the atf level?

What is the recommended mileage to cover after which one has to change ATF filter and transmission fluid for Subaru Forester?

There is no mileage where one "has" to change the transmission fluid or filter. It is your car and you can do with it as you wish. The warranty manual for my 2000 Forester recommends changing the fluid every 15,000 miles when used under severe conditions. I recommend changing ATF yearly and you shouldn't need to change the filter unless it has been damaged. It is as easy as changing the engine oil, so why not do a little preventive maintenance? --Ken

How do you change the automatic transmission fluid in your 1994 Subaru legacy?

You listed this question under Subaru Forester, but the answer is likely the same. Subaru is good enough to put a drain plug on the transmission so it is the same procedure as changing engine oil, except you use the transmission dipstick hole to refill. This does not change the fluid in the torque converter though, which probably holds almost half of the transmission fluid. If this is the first time you have changed fluid in this 16 year old car you may want to take it to a professional where they can flush the transmission. I always recommend yearly changes to prevent having to flush the converter. If you have the knowledge to assess the condition of the fluid that you drain, you may just want to change the fluid, drive it for a week or two, change again, drive, and change again until no more nasty stuff comes out. My assumption is that most people don't think of their transmission fluid until something goes wrong, especially on an older car.
