If the bike has a "points" ignition system, check the starter circuit to see if it has an "ignition resistor bypass" to give a hotter spark when starting. This was pretty common on cars of that era. My 1975 Triumph motorcycle is set up with points and a bypass. Check the service manual (or do a visual by tracing wires backwards from the points) to see if the bike has a ballast resistor -- jump it to see if it will run and, if so, replace it.
There probably are many reasons, but the only other one I can think of at the moment is a defective ignition coil, which has a "thermal intermitent" [occurs only at and above a certain temperature] which could be either a short, or an open.j3h.
The ballast resistor on the firewall, it's the porceloin thing that has wires running to it. also check the hot wire running to the volt meter on your gage cluster, i had the same problem replaced my ballast, relay, fusible link..... after waisting lots of money i found alot of rust on the bolt behind my volt meter, cleaned it all off, and its worked perfect every since and now have no electrical probs...
How do I tell if it is bad?
