If you're looking to repair the tranny and you do not have a shop with tools and experience do not bother. Trade the core in for a rebuilt unit , reinstall and drive. cracking open a tranny is not for the inexperienced.

It is important to maintain the fluid levels of a car with the correct fluid types. The transmission fluid type for a 1998 VW Jetta is Universal ATF or ATF 1 fluid.
Use 20W50 oil (Castrol makes it) in a type 1 VW.
More information needed, and need memory refreshed. Do you mean the bearing that is mounted on the rear axle assembly, the CV joint bearing, or the bearing in the transmission. As I recall, Type 1 is a VW bug. Please verify.

Would a word picture suffice? Imagine standing over your engine, with the end that bolts to the transmission away from you. On the right side of the engine, at the transmission end, is cylinder 1. Cylinder 2 is behind it. On the left side of the engine at the transmission end is cylinder 3, with cylinder 4 behind it. Cylinder 1 fires. Then 4 Then 3 and finally 2
