to find tdc is not hard
first remove spark plugs so you can turn engine over by hand
next get a long screwdriver that will fit thru spark plug hole, this needs to be rally long so it will not dissappear down the spark plug hole
then using number 1 piston ,insert long screw driver in sparkplug hole ,gently until it rests on top of piston
now manuelly with igntion off,and key removed, turn over engine until timing mark on harmonic balance is showing at pointer.
while doing this you need to watch to see if screw driver is going up or down,as the timing marks will cycle twiceon every revolution of the engine
if the screwdrive is down , tuen engine again until timing mark again appears at pointer, and screwdriver comes up.this is then TDC
you can then remove distributor cap to line up rotor button to proper place for tdc on the number one piston
PS: helps if 2 people are doing this. it is hard to watch screwdriver movement while watching timing marks.
Yes it is, It has no choice but to be at TDC.
you just do what mark on the crank is TDC
Number 1 when at TDC. Passenger side front of engine is #1.
stock base timing is 8 degrees before TDC
TDC
buy a book from auto zone
if you need to find tdc than put a screwdriver in the #1 cylinder hole and turn over by hand until the screwdriver is about to go down or up,you will find the spot in the crankshaft were you can turn it slightly and the screwdriver will go up a bit or down.
All timing marks are based on the #1 cylinder
1243 ign timing between 6 & 11 deg before TDC
8 to 9 degrees with a timing light with vacuum advance hooked up,
TDC is when the piston is at top dead center of the compression stroke. The easiest way to set it at TDC is to remove spark plug number one and insert a slim item such as a pencil or screwdriver into the spark plug hole and turn the crankshaft clockwise with a ratchet or breaker bar as you watch when the piston starts coming up. Remove the pencil or screwdriver and inseret your finger tip into the plug hole to feel for pressure (compression) building up. When you feel compression building up, remove your finger and re-insert the pencil or screwdriver to see when it reaches the top; the piston will be at TDC and the timing marks should be aligned. NOTE: The crankshaft rotates twice for each time the piston is at TDC.
BTDC means Before Top Dead Center, usually refers to when the spark plug will fire as the piston reaches TDC. BTDC means the spark plug will fire BEFORE the piston reaches TDC.
