The most common problems that would cause these symptoms are a bad thermostat or a bad water pump, to check you water pump allow your car come to operating temp with the radiator cap off and look inside to see if water is moving, if it is then your thermostat is probably bad, if it isn't then your pump is the problem

It is a timing belt and it is best to replace the idler, tensioner and belt at once. Also, the water pump if it is high mileage.
if the water pump is bad most vehicles have a wheep hole as a sort of warning. if this is the case replace the water pump and any seals relating.
