You need to determine if it's a stuck tranny or a linkage problem. Set the brake. Get under the car and remove the linkage end from the tranny. If the tranny can be shifted by hand from here then the problem is in the column. If it's still jammed take it to a shop for repair as it is beyond the scope of this page to explain how to tear down an automatic transmission. If you cannot move the shifter out of the park position then you have a problem with the shifter cable or the brake safety lock. If you can move the shifter to the drive position, and it doesnt go in gear then you are a few quarts low on transmission fluid
Key is designed to not come out unless the transmission is in the park position. If the shifter is in park but the transmission is not, then the linkage (which hooks the shifter to the transmission) has somehow come out of adjusment. It will need to be adjusted - I would suggest having this done by a professional.
well if your s-10 is stuck in park there is a good chance the transmission is bad in it.
If your Geo Prizm is stuck in park and will not shift, the transmission is locked up. It will need to be serviced.

Maybe car is in park.
Transmission cable that runs to your transmission is either broken or the link has came apart. Replace the cable and/or transmission and make sure if you have an automatic, to press down on the brake pedal before shifting out of park, most cars from 1960- 2010 have a lock-out feature so you cannot shift in or out of the Park position unless you are pressing the brake pedal.
