Replace the switch at the brake pedal.
If you need help with that, get a manual at Auto Zone. They're a lot cheaper than a mechanic.
I had same problem on my 2K . I would first ck. both of the tail / brake bulbs to see if one of the filaments are bad. This CAN cause tail lights to burn bright as brake lights and if you step on brake you will NOT see any difference. Do yourself a favor CHANGE BOTH BULBS at same time ; clean socket and use dielectric grease in socket. FWIW, a bad reverse light socket CAN cause hard shift on auto. For some reason focus has problem with electric connections ie. CORROSION
The screws that hold the rear lights in place on a focus are inside behind the rear pillar trim
Do parking and dash lights work? If not, may be fuse most vehicles it is the same circuit
The relay that controls the taillights and interior lights on a 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage is in the driver's side fuse box. It is to the left of the steering wheel in the dash. One thing to note about this vehicle is if a brake light burns out, the car might also lose the dash lights or interior lights. Check the brake lights before replacing a fuse that might not need replacing.
There are two filaments in the bulb that is used for taillights and brake lights. Make sure BOTH filaments are good before assuming that the bulb is not burned out. If, in fact, both filaments are good, next check the brake light switch. If it is good, check the turn signal switch that is in the steering column
2000-2005 Chevy Impalas have the same tail lights.....
If the brake lights do not work on Chevy Venture van 2000, try to disconnect the brake switch. Then short the two contacts of the connector to check if the brake lights are now working.
check the fuse, brake lights have their own, & check the brake switch at the top of the brake pedal
Are you sure you need the fuse for the cruise control. My cruise control wasn't working, neither were my brake lights. All 7 bulbs were burnt out. When the brake lights were replaced the cruise control worked.
Running lights (left side): Fuse #47 -- Running lights (right side): Fuse #48 -- Brake lights: Fuse #54. Fuse panel is on the lower left side (underneath) the dashboard. NOTE: If it is your brake lights that are not working and fuse # 54 looks okay, check the brake light switch, it may have gone bad.
Yhese are fed from different sorces so I would check the groiunds on the lights.
Check the brake light switch on the brake pedal
