First you have to have a Google account. Sign up for google voice, it's free. If it does not ask you to create a number during the sign up, after you done signing up, go to settings on the top right then click voice settings. Go under the phone tab and you should see create a number or change number. You have to have a cell phone number or a home phone number to get a google number. If you don't want to do that you can go to gmail and go to the chat tab on the left, then call phone.
