How do you make a Mac talk to you when you type?

Many applications for the Mac support the built in voices and can read the text on the screen to you. For example with a page of text opened in the TextEdit application select Start Speaking from Speech in the Edit menu. To have the Mac speak each letter as you type text you will need to turn on VoiceOver from Universal Access in the System Preferences. The various options for VoiceOver can be configured with the VoiceOver Utility.
