Exercise and maintaining low enough body fat for abs to show through (do not over eat). If you are between 10 to 20 years. Then try playing Badminton or do sit up's every day. I am sure you will have Ab's but not 6, you will have 4. Believe me! Just try it. May be it will take 2 months if you work hard. If you are fat try running every morning and after you become slim do sit up's and crunches.
don't listen to people people tell you!!! sit ups and crunches don't do anything to get rid of that layer of fat covering your abs. they just make those muscles bigger which in fact will make your stomach BIGGER!!! the only way to get washboard abs is...... 3 things, first don't eat those foods people call "healthy foods" they usually increase body fat, the answer to that is not to starve yourself but to not change your diet alot but just to eat a little more saturated fat, now this may come as a shock to you because your body wants to get rid of that "bad fat" so bad you sweat more and will get rid of more than just that fat it will burn that and some regular fat, but don't go overboard because your body cant burn it real real fast just fast-er. secondly, now the best exercise is ......running, mainly because it is the only exercise that works your entire body and make you sweat. and lastly, after you have gotten rid of your fat, that's when you want to start doing sit ups, crunches and leg lifts because only then is when you want to make your abs bigger. now these tips are not off an infomercial, to be honest its simple science. use these three principles and you can have abs like me and everyone I've told this too. (note: this will work for anybody, age does not apply to this type of science)
Short answer: Eat healthy, live healthy, do aerobics, do ab exercises, and do resistance training.
Diet: This does not necessarily mean eat less, unless you are overweight. You are going to need to stay away from food with saturated fats, get a lot of protein, keep away from junk food, take vitamins, and drink a lot of water. Eat things like eggs, low fat cottage cheese, skim milk, beans, chicken, cruciferous vegetables, fruits, nuts and whole grains.
Aerobics: Many people think that sit ups are the key to abs. This is only partially the case. It is even more important to reveal your abs by burning all of the belly fat in the way. Anyone that has abs also has a very low percentage of body fat. The best way to burn fat is through aerobic exercises such as running, swimming, biking, interval training, or basically anything that will keep your heart pumping continuously. You will need to pick one or more of these exercises and begin doing it regularly.
Ab exercises: It is not enough to limit yourself to just sit-ups. The best routines will work every single abdominal muscle by incorporating a variety of exercises. You can find many good ab exercises and accompanying video descriptions on the internet.
Resistance training: Even if you only care about your abs there are several reasons you should consider resistance training. First and foremost, your body will be more balanced. Second, resistance training increases testosterone production which is paramount for growing muscle. Third, resistance training is great for your musculoskeletal system. This means that your joints, ligaments, and bones will become stronger as well as the obvious benefits of additional muscle mass.
Age won't make a differnce. If you want to see your abs do some running to strip off the layer of fat covering them. Then just do an exercises to increase tone. Do low reps w/ weight to add size/thickness and do high reps to tone.
It takes 6 weeks before you start to see muscles growing. However, still go for it!
If you have a layer of fat on your stomach you will NEVER see your abs. So, start cutting weight if you can pinch a few inches. Skip situps and go for a hypertrophy rep-range of 6-12 of 3-4 sets on an exercise such as hip thrusts, weighted crunches, Decline situps with weight, raised legs crunch, V-Ups, kneeling cable crunch, hanging leg raise. Then throw in 3-4 sets to muscle failure, of rotational exercises like wood chop, russian twist, and side crunch to work your obliques which are a key to a nice looking 6 pack.
Keep in mind you dont want to train half of your body and not the other. It leads to imbalances, postural problems, etc so throw in some prone cobras and other back extension exercises.
hope that helped. I have a B.S. in Exercise Science and i say this is good advice.

Six pack abs.
Yes, there is such a thing as a six pack abs (on the abdomen).

You cannot develop "six-pack" abs in one day.
Six pack abs refer to the top most muscles of the abdomin. The six pack refers to six muscles, three on each side, starting just below the rib cage and spanning to the waist. A google search on six pack abs images will show you what they look like.
