Remove the large plastic screws around the back, and inside the locked storage area, plus, the ledge at the bottom of the lock (bar) and the small screws on top.

behind a removeable plastic trim piece in the left rear of the vehicle - this plastic is about 30" long and supports the retractable cargo cover open the rear hatch/tailgate and work from the rear release two plastic clips - one forward and one rear wiggle the plastic piece out and the jack is behind it
May be a BCM glitch or the rear trunk latch there is a recall from gm about the rear hatch latch
I have the same problem with mine. What i found out is its the cable form the outside handle goes to a plastic piece that pivots and opens the door. On this piece the rivet holding it in gets rusted, and as you pull on the outside handle it stays in the opened position.Once you start driving the doors automatically lock and because the rear hatch is still you cannot unlock the back door to close it.The Fix - There is a small plastic square piece on the cover of the back door on the inside where the lock is. Take this out and use a flashlight to see the white plastic piece with the cable attached to at the back of the lock assembly.Get a screwdriver and push this down, then unlock the door and the door with close. It is pretty easy.I took the whole back panel off and used wd40 all over the lock and moved it manually until it freed itself and i haven't had a problem in about a month.Mark
If its like my 2003 Expy, the relay for the rear wiper motor also controls the rear hatch lock
You open the back hatch door and pull the panel away from the latch and push down on the lever to the lock the lock will then pop open and you can shut the hatch
By taking your key and sticking it into the lock near the hatch an turning.
Its located on rear door. Look to the outside edge.its a black round plastic piece about the size of a quarter with a slit in it. Just turn it to lock and unlock.
A pipe inside the rear hatch has diconnected, simply remove the plastic inner panel inside the hatch and reconnect
Isn't there a key lock that releases it?
To manually open the rear hatch of a 2002 beetle can be hard depending on weather the hatch is closed or open. If needing to manually open a hatch you will have to take the plastic cover from the inside of the hatch then push the latch open.
