Heck, in this day and age you can probably message him on MySpace and see if he won't start talking online. Message/email him and ask a question about a class he's in or a sport he does, as if you only asked because you know he's involved in it... really just anything to get a conversation started that you can think of ways to keep going. Then at school you could easily walk right up to him and say "hey, thanks for the info"... and there, he's got a face to go with the email. Otherwise, you'll either have to get involved in the same activities he is or- give in and ask him if he'd like to go to the movies or something.
