drain coolant out of radiator, there is a petcock on the bottom of the radiator. when drained follow lower radiator hose to engine. hose is clamped on an aluminum/plastic thermostat housing held on by 3 studs with nuts on them. remove nuts and remove housing. thermostat will probably be stuck in engine, remove with screwdriver or grab with pliers, caution coolant will run out fast. put new thermostat and gasket in make sure spring on new thermostat is facing TOWARD engine. bolt housing back on close petcock and refill engine through top radiator hose. when full fill radiator and start vehicle. turn on heater and wait until hot air is felt from blower vents. run until normal operating temp is reached. let cool and check radiator level.

You have to remove the thermostat housing, which is located right where the top radiator hose clamps to the engine. Take off that housing, and the thermostat will come right out. Be sure to install it the same way you took it out...

The housing retainer bolts are loose or the gasket has deteriorated. If replacing the gasket, use pliable gasket sealant to improve the seal. it could also be the water pump went bad and leaking water down beside the thermostat. the thermostat is part of the water
Go to Chilton or Haynes manual and they have all the pictures and drawings necessary to correctly install the belt. If you don't want to pay for it go to the Library and they will usually have a copy.
