On most block heaters I've seen you have to knock out a freeze plug (preferably in the center of the engine so the heat will disapate evenly) and install the heater there. They're simply inserted into the vacant freeze plug opening and tightened up. Its a little more involved than that: on my '04 TJ -6cyl, the dealer had to install my blocker heater, since the frost plug is located directly behind the AC compressor, this has to be removed for access, the freon is purged and then recharged after, the cost is about $150-170 which includes parts and labour. Remove and engine block expansion plug. Insert the block heater. Seal the block heater. Attached the wiring harness to the block heater.
To normally install a block heater you must remove an expanstion/ freeze plug in tighten in the block heater. The 6 cylinder 4.2L engine unfortunately does not appear to have any such plugs. The V8 engine should have a screw in style block heater installed in the left front of the engine block just below the cylinder head.
Modern block heaters are installed inline in the heater hose going from the engine to the firewall, instead of electrically warming the engine block they circulate heated water through the coolant system, which is kinda nice because you will have warn heat inside the vehicle a lot faster in addition to nice viscous oil.
Begin by training the water from your 2003 engine block. Remove the wiring harness from the block heater. Remove the block heater retaining bolts. The block heater will come out. Reverse the process to install your new block heater.
In the block you knock out a freeze plug and install it. There is also a magnetic one that you can attach to the block if it is iron.
if you see no plug than it has neither one you have to pop out the frost plug and put in a block heater
The block heater, on your 2001 C 15 Caterpillar diesel engine, can be removed by loosening the retaining nut. The block heater will easily come out. Reverse the process to install the new heater.
drain coolant from radiator, remove one of the frost plugs in engine block, install block heater in place of frost plug, refill radiator with coolant.
In most cases a block heater replaces one of t he freeze plugs in the engine
If your talking about the plug for the block heater, it's located in front of the battery.
Drain coolant from radiator and engine block Remove passenger's side rear freeze plug and replace with block heater kit
I have a 1992 Olds with the 3800 engine; the block heater is almost inaccessible. The engine is sideways and the block heater is in the frost plug location just over the frame at the back. Suggestion: unless it is leaking just take the frost plug out in the front of the engine and install the block heater there where it is accessible. Duane
