You need a special tool that attaches to a standard socket wrench. This can be bought at any auto parts store. The tool mates to the cylinder and must be rotated a 1/2 turn counterclockwise than clockwise until it bottoms out. This caused me much consternation when I tried to depress the piston with a c-clamp like any other disc brake I ever changed out. It is actually very easy with the correct tool.
Who ever wrote this should consider the fact that one would have to explain what the special tool is and not, that you can just get it at the auto store. thanks for wasting my time
-- The caliper tool is only required on the rear brakes, not the front. For the front, a spindle drop c-clamp will suffice.
Be sure to break the lugs loose (without removing them) before lifting the car and use jackstands to support the weight, not the jack alone. Remove the cap on the brake fluid reservoir.
If you're just replacing pads, you'll only need to be concerned with the two caliper slide bolts on the topside of the caliper. Should require a 15mm open-ended wrench or small pair of vice-grips to hold the nut and a 13mm wrench or socket for the bolt head. Once both are removed you can slide the caliper from it's bracket. Don't let the caliper hang from the brake lines.
Place one of the old pads against the caliper piston and using the c-clamp, clamp down until the piston is fully retracted. This will add space for the new and thicker pads. Apply brake no squeal to the backside of each pad before installing. The lips on both edges of the pad need to sit on the caliper bracket (same way they came off -- easy to get when you're looking at it). Replace the caliper so that the springs on the top of each pad are seated in the groove underneath the caliper. Line up the bolts and tighten them down.
That's about it as far as pads go. It's not required that you bleed your brakes after replacing pads, but it's a good idea. Either way, be sure to replace the cap on the brake reservoir and pump the brakes until they tighten up.

CALL VW! I just had a problem with my 2001 Jetta Wolfsburg (1.8T). The brake light switch is on RECALL. You might be able to get it fixed for NOTHING. My brake lights weren't working, and I called the dealership, and I had the problem fixed (no cost to me) within a week. FYI- there is also a recall on the hazard light switch. If it's the same switch as used in the MKIV Jetta, this VWVortx thread is the definitive do-it-yourself instruction on how to do it... http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1158315
