You can splice into the brake lights on in the back of your Miata.
The brake light assembly should be held in by a single Phillips head screwdriver at the top, revealed when you open the trunk.
There are additional bolts behind the brake light assembly, that are revealed when you remove the faux interior carpeting that are held by small plastic pop fastener. These can be removed by using a fingernail or small flathead screwdriver. Carefully pull the center pin up, then you can remove the entire fastener.
Vampire taps are the easiest way to tap, you'll need to compare the gauge of your light wiring harness to get the correct gauge taps.
The bulbs should not have polarity, so it shouldn't matter which is power and which is ground.

Barring that, most business that sell and install trailer hitches will also install trailer wiring harnesses. If you're a DIY, go to the local auto parts store and ask. They probably have the wiring harness you need all setup to plug into the manufacturer's wiring harness.
