On the lower leg of the motor, just where the gearcase bolts on, you will notice the anti-ventilation plate. Just above this plate, (the "plate" resembles a flat, horizontal fin), many motors have a second plate. You'll want to hang the engine where the bottom of the boat falls between these two plates. You can go a little lower than this, but not where the boat bottom falls below the bottom plate. This will likely cause cavitation and or engine overheat.
Usually the serial number is on a tag mounted on the bracket that holds the outboard engine to the boat.

Need to know if its 2 or 4 cycle.
What's the model#. And what do you want to know? OMC made lots of motors in Belgium.
In order to determine the year model of a Mercury outboard, one needs to know the engine serial number, and the horsepower rating. This information is compared to an engine model / year chart to find the year model of a paricular engine.but where do you find this?
how do u remove the lower uint on an outboard motor? Depends on the outboard. Some Johnson/Evinrudes required that the powerhead (engine) be removed first for example. Look for a service manual for your particular motor on ebay, and it will tell you all you need to know to avoid problems.

It should be marked somewhere on the engine shroud, but if you really don't know and can't get the manual, 40:1 is probably safe.
