An Overview AnswerThis question itself is questionable. What the true religion is is open to interpretation. Sure every contributor in answering this question will defend her/his faith or religion. This is very clear from the many different opinions below. However, I will not enter into debates to answer what is the true religion because this debate will never come to a single conclusion as for the true religion. Instead I want to highlight the following:
  • Any religion has two main parts:
    • The first part: The faith and worship part, and
    • The second part: The human interrelation part
  • Regarding the first part: my own belief is that each religion has its own specific faith principles and its own specific worship rituals. This is the part that all religions are different about. Fortunately, this part is regarding only the relationship between yourself and your God. Accordingly, it should not be a matter of concern of any one else whatever her/his own religion. It should not be a matter of debate between different religion believers.
  • Regarding the second part: I am sure that all religions are basically similar in all issues regarding relationships among people. In reality, there are no differences among the religions regarding the way that people of different religions should treat each other and deal with each other. All religions have, basically, same morals and conduct principles. All religions, logically and spiritually, call all people to live together in love, peace, and harmony regardless their different religions or beliefs.
  • In Islam religion, God says that people were created in different faiths and that God could have created them having only one faith and one religion. However, God left for people the choice of own faith and religion not to have conflicts together but to live together in tolerance and to compete in piety and in doing the good for mankind.
  • conclusion: It does not matter which religion is the true one. Let us concentrate on the human interrelation part, which is the same in all religions. Let us live all together with tolerance, justice, and forgiveness. Let us act for the benefit of humanity and our planet.
Various Opinions:The following opinions have been expressed
  • Since all religion is based on belief in the absence of proof, 'true religion' is specific and personal to each person. Whatever spiritual 'truths' that person believes is their true religion.

...........................................................................................................................................

  • Catholic
  • Christianity is. They (We) have the KJV(King James Version) Bible, and that is the one and only true Bible.
  • Twelve Tribes of Israel is. They have the KJV( King James) Bible, and that is the one and only true Bible. For they are the true children of God and the commandments of God are with them (hebrews 8:10). They are the only religion in the world that God has known (amos 3:1-2). They are the lost sheep of God (mathew 15:24). For the gate going to heaven is narrow and only the few know it (mathew 7:13). What makes it narrow? it is narrow because of the very strict rules/laws that Holy Spirit has given to them and that the Holy Spirit will be the one to punish them. They do not believe in doctors (James 5:13-15)(Jerimiah 17:5). God has let them know the mystery of heaven (1timothy 3:16) for with the children of Israel the mystery was given and to them who are not it was given in parables(Luke 8:10). When the time comes the children of Israel will be saved (Acts 13:23). For they own the word of God and the word is closed up until the end of time(Daniel 12:9) for the word is not written in the bible (juan 21:25) (revelations 10:4). that God will give them the Kingdom of Heaven (revelations 21:12) so seek the Lord while He may be found, Call upon Him while He is near (Isaiah 55:6) because time will come that He will sent a famine on the land Not a famine of bread,

    Nor a thirst for water,

But of hearing the words of the LORD. (amos 8:11)

  • The Greek scriptures offer this insight: "If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world." James 1:26-27
  • The usefulness of this question is doubtful. There are some religions that dogmatically teach that theirs is the only acceptible one. Practitioners of those religions are likely to support those teachings, and members of different religions within that group will disagree. Can this be a surprising or unpredictable result? Others practice religions that have more open concepts of what it is to be 'true', and for them the question will have no meaning.
  • Since there is no objective proof that any one religion is more true than another, the answer to this question depends on each individual's beliefs. Jews believe that Judaism is the true religion, while Christians believe that Christianity is the true religion, but Muslims believe that Islam is the true religion. Zoroastrians believe that theirs is the true religion. Liekwise, Hindus believe that theirs is the one true religion. There are many other religions, past and present, whose followers believe that only this religion is true. And atheists believe that no religion is really true, and that there is no god. It is up to each person what religion, if any, you wish to follow.
  • Islam is the true religion. It is the most pure religion in the world. The Muslim book, the Qura'n is the real God words in the real language (Arabic) that still an alive language. Qura'n tells the truth about faith, other religions, science facts, conduct, and about real life. The holy book of Muslims hasn't been altered or modified by any human.
  • Islam has the same fictional characters such as Noah, Abraham, Jesus, and many others that are found within the Jewish Torah and Christian Bible. To prove that Noah is only a fictional character and to automatically prove that every religious book about Noah is only a fictional book then only two facts are needed:
  • There would have been absolutely nothing left to eat for the thousands of poor starving carnivores after a universal flood because all of their prey would have been drowned and decayed for over a year. The same is true for the thousands of herbivores because all of the plants would have also drowned. Plus, any surviving seeds would have taken many months to grow into crops and any ark animals would have starved to death before the harvest.
  • It is written in the Bible that the ark came to rest near the mountains of Ararat which could possibly be referring to Mount Ararat in Turkey. Yet, there is a huge problem with that conclusion and it is this: "Thousands of disembARKed animals would have resulted in the creation of very recognizable animal populations by thousands of different kinds of animals having more offspring in the surrounding areas. All of them would have multiplied and reproduced into local populations of their own kinds in that specific location. However, there are no surviving remnants, not one kind, of hundreds of foreign animals from other continents, not even their ancient remains, (no wild lemurs, grizzlies, kangaroos, penguins, or even wild turkeys, etc!) neither within nor surrounding the whole Mediterranean region, which covers thousands of land miles."

______________________________________________________________________________

  • Thousands of animals did not leave an ark and then simply vanish into thin air without a trace... Poof! In other words, all of Earth's many kinds of animals would have lived somewhere in the Middle East if they once exited an ark. Yet, there is no evidence that foreign populations of wild koalas or wild armadillos, etc. have ever lived anywhere in the Middle East in the past or in the present. The only logical explanation is that the story of Noah's Ark is only a fictional story. The Bible's book of Genesis is entirely dependent on the credibility of the story of Noah's Ark to have any credibility of its own. The book of Exodus is entirely dependent on the credibility of Genesis to have any credibility of its own. The book of Leviticus also is entirely dependent on the credibility of Genesis to have any credibility of its own. So on and so forth, all the way through to the last book of Revelation. Therefore, since Noah's Ark is a fictional story then every single religious book which contains the character Noah, is only a fictional book.
  • Religions mainly originated from generations of tribal members telling elaborate ancient oral traditions to each other while eating dinner around the camp fire. The stories were always constantly changing, with different ideas and details being used each time the story was told. Once the Sumerians invented the first written language along with the first organized religion those stories were later written into religious books, which are still being revised as new editions today. Humanism may be the only viable option we really have left since we are like one big family living together on this third rock from the sun. Even though I do not agree with them I still love my religious brothers and sisters who honestly believe that they're on the right path. Yet, I do hope that all brainwashed religious believers can keep their religious nonsense to themselves and not start any more trouble with it.
  • It is a shame that religions are being allowed to promote their unsupported beliefs. Religious enterprises have full privileges and face little opposition in broadcasting their biased material to the world. The main reason that this false information is being allowed to be broadcast is probably because of all the money it generates. The majority of people in high places think that lying to people in the name of religion is not a problem. People need to be educated that religion is only mythology written into fictional bibles. Thankfully, the truth can be shared on these internet pages for free.

Ignoring the problem will not fix it nor make the problem go away and it will get worse. Allowing the clergy to deceive people... in the name of god... is the worst part of all! If you believe in god then honor at least one important rule. "You shall not lie." The clergy do not know god. By never knowing god the clergy only lie. Lying about god is very wrong. Everyone should be ashamed for allowing billions of ignorant believers to live in religious bondage all for the sake of freedom of religion, which is far more horrific than ironic. Everyone alive today is to blame for allowing all of those ignorant religious believers to be deceived by storybook religions if they know which ones are not true but never do anything to aid the reformation of religion.

There is a separation of church and state, so a government won't be able to interfere with religion. Also, there are many universities and seminaries that are willfully concealing this information mainly for money. If any change happens it will start from the bottom up. Ordinary citizens will have to be the main catalysts in causing any significant religious reformation. The main goal is to label all of the known fiction inside every religious book and identify its known truths. Then all of that information should be added to textbooks, dictionaries, and encyclopedias for everyone to read.

Please tell the truth most of the time and then behold the miraculous events that will unfold. I know that is quite impossible for anyone to be completely honest. There are just too many dangerous situations around today that prevent anyone from revealing the truth safely all of the time. But, other than maintaining your personal safety or the safety of others, I urge you to be as honest as you can be - all of the time. Honor truth and good things will happen. Everyone is able to discern the truth by themselves.

  • I love questions like this. Objectively, if you ask a Buddhist, they will say Buddhism, a Catholic will say Catholicism, a Baptist will say... you guessed it... Baptist. The truth about the Truth is one of the all time mysteries of humanity. Pray, pray, pray, and let God, Allah, Buddha or whoever lead you to the path that He wants you to take and not the path that man wants you to take. Because only He can answer that question for you and you are right if you think your answer will be different from everyone else's.
  • There are a range of answers here depending upon one's beliefs, or lack of belief, or even prejudices. These opinions are sometimes based on fact, but are also based on misconceptions (eg that somehow 'Baptists' are different from 'Catholics' - aren't they both Christian? or the KJV Bible is the 'only' true Bible - what about the original Greek?) or otherwise (eg Jesus being a 'fictional' character).

We have to start with this question right back to the beginning. Almost all religions agree that God (Allah or whatever) was the prime Creator, or the source behind the Big Bang. Even Deists and many agnostics agree with this. Physicists and cosmologists also agree that, at one time in history, the universe came into being, and that this universe adheres to beautiful natural laws embodied in the very fabric of the universe. More to the point, there is much evidence for design within the universe rather than these laws being pure chance. The Anthropic Principle suggests that this universe was designed in such a way that life is possible. Any deviation, however slight, from the original, and stil existing, physical laws, would mean that life could never be. Anywhere. It is as if the universe knew life was coming one day and has bent over backwards to enable life to exist. Also most would agree that there is still a force of Good in the world (Christians call this the Holy Spirit) as well as a force of evil. Genetically we cannot explain why humans, who are primed to survive at all costs (Dawkins - the Selfish gene) still look after the sick and disadvantaged often at great cost to themselves instead of abandoning the weak as many animals do. C S Lewis asserted that each of us has the innate sense of right and wrong inbuilt into us (by a Creator?) that works alongside genetic instinct that sets us apart from animals as he regards us as a spiritual creature rather than just simply flesh and blood.

So, this Creator - 'God' - has revealed himself to us through nature, physics, religion and especially love. But which revelation is true is the real question.

Firstly, we need to consider the ancient religions(Roman, Mayan, Egyptian, Babylonian, Greek etc). It seems that these could be discounted fairly swiftly. The reason for this is simple. If the gods of these religions are indeed Creator and therefore omipotent, all-seeing and all-pervading, then it seems unthinkable that such a god or gods should simply vanish into insignificance, to be replaced by other religions, most of which worship one deity. This does not prove that the ancient gods are false, but it renders the likelihood of them being false as a distinct possibility, if not almost a certainty.

Hindus see God as manifested in many ways through many 'gods', but the most common manifestation is that of Krishna - the avatar of Vishnu, who, to the Hindu, is the nearest equivalent of the Christian/Muslim/Jewish God. Unlike Christ, however, whom followers claim led a perfect life and who showed clear signs of a deity (see below) as well as claiming to be God, Krishna did none of these things. Like Moses (who killed an Egyptian charge-hand) Krishna was also a murderer (he killed his own uncle) and led a rather colourful life. Nevertheless, by eventually being close spiritually to Vishnu, Krishna himself, after his death, was worshipped as a deity - much like the Roman emperors were. Hindus still regard this manifestation of God as their most important manifestation - but it cannot be likened to the absolute divinity and humanity that Christ claimed for himself. For Hindus, the manifestation of Vishnu through Krishna is seen as the most helpful way of understanding God. Many would disagree, but if they find that helpful, so be it. Buddhists are the similar - but they do not see the need for God himself, but certainly see the need for what that God means in life, and how his Spirit is at work throughout Creation. The smaller religions, where prophets (like Sikhism, Confucianism etc) have revealed aspects of God, also have much truth - as revealed by their human prophets. However, as to the degree of truth there, that is a different matter. Nevertheless, for the adherents to those faiths, for them, that truth seems sufficient enough for them to pin their lives to those faiths, and, for them, those are the 'true' religions, although whether or not their perception of 'truth is correct is a different latter. This then brings us on to the big three: the Abrahamic religions of Judaism, Islam and Christianity which most of the world adhere to. Unlike the religions above, Judaism, Islam and Christianity all worship directly this God who is the prime cause for Creation and who is at work in the world and in human hearts today. One would possibly think, therefore, that they have much more in the way of truth about them than those religions that have revelations of God either through third parties or in a less direct way. Judaism worships this God as revealed through the prophets of the Old Testament. Prophets such as Moses, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and so on. Sadly, though, the Old Testament records time after time the inability of the Jewish nation to adhere to God's standards, paying him lip service and obeying rules but little else. Whilst there are many devout Jews right across the world, corporately Israel even today has turned away from love and compassion and has chosen the way of war. The problems in the middle east are testimony to this. Therefore, the revelation of God as perceived in Judaism is flawed. They are no longer the 'chosen people' as they have gone their own way.

Islam, however, is a different case. We hear of suicide bombers and sharia law, and these scaremongering tactics of the media betray the real loving nature of the true Muslem. They worship God (Allah) as revealed to them by their prophet Muhammad. Although there are areas within the Koran that are challenging (just like the Jewish Old Testament) most of the Koran deals with love, justice, an end to poverty and other great ideals. As such, it is a revelation from God that has to be taken seriously, as, by its very nature, it must hold great truth.

The real difference, though, comes with Christianity. And here we have a problem. For, unlike the other two Abrahamic religions of Judaism and Islam, the founder of Christianity never claimed to be a prophet from God. All the other religions mentioned here have, at their heart, revelation from God declared to a mere human. Moses was a human, Krishna was a human bestowed with god-like qualities, Buddha was human also, as was Muhammad. The reason why Christianity sticks out like a sore thumb is that Jesus, though perfectly human, also claimed to be God and not simply a prophet. Therefore, he claimed not to be a revelation from God, or a representative, or a prophet - but God himself in human form. Evidence of this comes from the gospels, Paul's (and others') letters and the historian Josephus, among other sources. Jesus forgave sins - only God could do that. He accepted worship- only God could do that. He drove out demons in his own name - not God's. He healed, raised the dead, and spoke, not as a prophet, but as one 'with authority'. The religious leaders were out to get him because, as they are recorded saying, "he claimed to be God". More to the point, his sacrifice in his death was the supreme act of love. Muhammad died a natural death, as did Buddha, Moses and all the other prophets. They have graves. At Jesus' death, the resurrection that occurred three days later was enough to convince his followers (and the billions of followers since) that his claims were correct. They were so convinced by this that they were willing to die in the Roman Arena rather than denounce him.

If one considers the population growth of the last two to thee hundred years where the world's population has shown exponential growth, it can be shown statistically that more people have lived in the last 500 years than have existed throughout the rest of humanity's history. The number of Christians in the world today numbers around 2.2 billion, and an estimated 4-5 billion Christians at least have existed since Christianity was founded. This makes it, by far, the largest religion the world has ever known, especially when one considers that the ancient peoples, say. The Roman Empire, numbered merely in the millions throughout the time of the empire.

It must be said, however, that whatever the religion, there have, as some have alluded to here, been many atrocities perpetrated in the name of 'religion'. While historians will cite the Crusades, the massacre of Cathars, the Inquisition and so on, these are often confined to the annals of history and can often, erroneously be forgotten. Yet they represent shameful periods in the history of Christendom. I know only too well the terrorists in Northern Ireland since the 1960s where bombings here on the mainland of the UK where I live were commonplace and all because some were called 'protestants' and others 'catholics'. Yet, as you must realise, these atrocities, while being carried out in the name of 'religion', have absolutely nothing to do with religion itself, and certainly not Christianity - just as Islamic terrorists have nothing absolutely to do with the peace-loving Muslim who attends faithfully the mosque each Friday. Sadly human nature is warped and liable to be aggressive, volatile and violent and using religion as the sole 'cause' is a little unfair - especially as most of the atrocities in the 20th Century - eg Stalin's massacre of millions, Chairman Mao's slaughter of millions - not to mention Ceaucescu, Pol Pot, Kim il Sung and many others who have caused more deaths than the Inquisition, Crusades, Northern Ireland troubles and even two world wars put together - and these people represented officially atheist states.

Therefore, it seems that all religions have a great deal of truth in them. However, to the Christian, the revelation of God in Jesus Christ is seen as the ultimate revelation, that supercedes all others, as Christians meet God 'straight from the horse's mouth' rather than a second-hand revelation or avatar. This does not mean that the other religions are wrong - far from it. But one might argue that they may well be possibly incomplete.

  • Because more people buy the cheapest cars it does not mean that those are the best cars. It is wrong for anyone to suggest that their theology is more authentic than others because of some unsubstantiated claim that their Man God (Jesus) was more authentic than the Man God ( Krishna or Hercules) of other religions.
  • You Should Be Catholic, it's what Jesus wants.

There is no true religion of this world, because God is not religion but a spiritual bond. God's existence and belief in him should be natural to everyone, and it is, but seems like it is'NT. This is because Satan and the other fallen angels dedicate their life to decieving people, so they would not believe and/or follow the one and true God.

Christianity, which is the fullfillment of Judiasm is the closest religion that is to the truth. Actually, it is the complete truth except for the false baptism used in Christianity. Christianity uses the baptism of "In the of name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit" when it is really "In the name of Jesus". I claim to be a Christian, not as in a part of the religion of Christianity, but as in what the word "Christian" really means, "a follower of Christ".

So, there is no real RELIGION of this world, but there is one true SPIRITUAL BOND, the spiritual bond between you and the one and only ALMIGHTY GOD. Accept Jesus as your Lord and Saviour, Ask Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, and be baptized in the name of Jesus. So that you do receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, threw the word of the Holy Son, from the Holy Father.

While there is no answer to your question, opinions are welcome:

All religions hold fragments of the truth but the fullness of truth is the Holy Catholic Church.

If you really want to know what the true religion is look in the bible and your question will be answered.

  • The answer is obvious. There are tens of thousands of religions to choose from on planet Earth. None is "the true religion" since religion is a manifestation of humanity's imagination. Whatever you believe is true for you.

A: Use these seven points to evaluate the "trueness" of your religion: 1) On what are its teachings based? Are they from your God, or are they largely from men? (2 Tim. 3:16; Mark 7:7)**2) Is it making known the name of God? (John 17:6) "It is Jehovah your God you must worship, and it is to him alone you must render sacred service." (Matt. 4:10)**3) True religion has such faith that is accompanied by works.-(Jas. 2:26).**4) Is it largely ritualistic, a formality, or is it a way of life? (Isa. 1:15-17) True religion upholds The Bible's standard of morality and clean speech instead of weakly going along with popular trends. (1 Cor. 5:9-13; Eph. 5:3-5) (Gal. 5:22, 23)**5) Do its members truly love one another? (John 13:35)**6) Is it truly separate from the world? Jesus said that his true followers would be "no part of the world." (John 15:19) (Jas. 1:27) Can that be said of those whose clergy and other members are involved in politics, or whose lives are largely built around materialistic and fleshly desires?-1 John 2:15-17.**7) Are its members active witnesses concerning God's Kingdom? Jesus foretold: "This good news of the kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations; and then the end will come." (Matt. 24:14) (Matt. 10:7, 11-13; Acts 5:42; 20:20).

If your religion follows the bible in all issues like not going to war with your fellow man, or abstaining from blood, or celebrating holidays. Also everything that is said to you should be backed up by scripture, if not you don't have the true religion.

You would know that religion is true if a genuine miracle occurred and was witnessed by many people of widely different faiths and by agnostics and atheists, all of whom agreed that this was indeed a miracle and could only have come from a divine power. Presumably that divine power would identify himself and proclaim which is the true religion. Until then, those who believe will continue to believe, and trust that religion is true.

I'm not sure that Wikianswers is the right venue for your question in the manner in which it's presently worded. Each religion will, of course, point to their own view of the Divine.
Rather, you might want to post the question reworded specifically, in every one of the subcategories of religions: Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Sikhism, etc., and read the answers posted by those who are knowledgeable in each of them, to at least get a picture of what each religion says for itself.
