There is no drive shaft to speak of in a Beetle. The Axle is part of the Transmission so the engine bolts directly to the transmission/axle. I don't know if you can tow an Automatic. It's ok to tow a manual bug. Just make sure it's out of gear.

Some early 71' & 72' VW Super Beetles had flat windshields, later bugs had curved. Major changes were MacPherson struts and changes to the front skirt. The struts ride smoother but can be a pain to replace without proper gear. Unless you know what you're doing it is better left to a pro.
