When you pull the hood handle, it seems as if the latch should have pop the hood. The hood is so heavy that every time you close it, little by little the 2 knobs (one on each side of the car) gets pushed down.
You need one person to pull the hood handle and another person to pull up on the hood. This has worked time and again so don't give up.
Make sure that you unwind the knobs so that you don't continue in having this problem! I had same prob, try pulling latch then slam the door harder than usual, this popped it up just enough. since i have replaced gas hood lifts and fixed the prob.
if you can at least pop the hud a little bit you can rich your hand under the hun and pull on the latch that should let you open the hud.

HOW DO I OPEN HOOD ON CAR WHEN CABLE IS BROKEN
Opening the hood on a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am is very easy to do. The hood is opened by pulling on the hood release latch inside the car on the drivers side. After the latch is pulled the hood will release. The hood is then opened by pulling the second release under the hood.
The heat valve is stuck open.
If yours is like mine it has a key as well as electric lock. otherwise your in a mess.
Open the driver's side door and remove the panel on the side of the dash. If not there, then the passangerside of the dash.
Check under plastic panel just forward of wipers with hood open. Should say relay center or something like that. A couple of clips and a wing nut to remove cover if I remember correctly.
To accessthe blower motor, open the hood. Look on the plastic fascia under the windshield wipers in front of the passenger. You'll see an opening plate with two little tabs. Lift those and remove the plate.
