How do you or should you break up with your highly depressed girlfriend when you dream of other girls several times a week and are obsessed with them?

You are experiencing normal feelings (without the obsession) because you are unhappy being in a relationship with your depressed girlfriend. Depression is a very difficult problem with many people. If you loved her enough you'd stand by her and get help. Obviously, you aren't in love with her that much, but, be warned, even a good friend would stand by another friend that is depressed! She needs to at least see her doctor and get a proper diagnosis and there is help for depression. If you give up on this relationship so easily then it proves you aren't mature enough to handle a serious relationship in the future. There is no 100% guarantee that the person you choose to date, possibly marry won't become depressed or have an illness and this could also involve yourself! When you love someone you stick by them through thick and thin and try to find the help they need. It's your choice!

If you decide to end this relationship at least say nothing for now and talk to your girlfriend and tell her she needs help. If she refuses tell her you can't go on in the relationship with the way things are. Get on the internet and read about depression so you can assure her that there is a high rate of depression in the U.S. and Canada(Obviously. Those darn Canadians!)and she isn't the only one and that there is help for her if she wants to reach out and take it. If she still refuses you are going to have to just leave.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with dreaming of others, its natural, but obsession is different. Maybe you shouldn't be in a serious relationship if you have such strong feelings for others and not your girlfriend. If the girl is already upset don't tell her of your dreams that will only make it worse. You do have the right like any other to be in a happy, healthy relationship and the best thing you can do is be as honest, not hurtful, to this girl and let her know things are not working out and you need to part ways. Do not let her convince you that her life is over with out you because its not but if you honestly feel she is a danger to herself after this go to her parents or guardians and let them know where you stand so they can keep an eye out for anything unusual. This needs to be done face to face, you should be able to show some maturity and respect enough to do this like a man. Good luck and be smart.
