Remove the button from the mirror stalk and glue the button to window with 'Loctite Auto Window Adhesive'. After 5 minutes or so fit the mirro onto the button. -BTW there are at least 2 ways this button attaches to mirror stalk. 1- a small allen screw,ans2 -a flat metal spring between the two parts.
It slides in the direction of the smaller end. Be sure and glue the small end up, then slide the mirror back on.
If by clip you mean the "shoe" that is the shiney square piece of metal that is in the mirror holder it slides out of the holder with prying by a screwdriver. Be careful not to hurt yourself.

go to the parts store and get a rear view mirror mounting kit and follow the instructions to a T.
You can replace a rearview mirror, on your 1996 Infiniti, by removing the old mirror with a scraper. Apply the glue to the cleaned surface. Hold the new mirror in place until the glue dries.

Rotate the mirror base 90 degrees clockwise and it will release from the base. Then remove the electrical harness. This came from a repair manual. I have not tried it.
If you can't remove the metal mount, why would you want to remove it to reglue it back on? Because you might want to place it in a different location, because of height of driver, or in my case , I own a driving school and we have to place another rearview mirror for our instructors. When we sell the cars we must remove the second mirror and the metal(baseplate) . I also would like to know a good way to remove this baseplate
