If all else fails a replacement of the affected hip joint with a prosthesis may be necessary and has become a common way of dealing with this problem
There are number of ways.
1. Use an anti-inflammatory medication such as an NSAID. Common ones are ibuprofen, Naprosyn, Celebrex. etc.
2. Get a corticosteroid injection into the hip, typically by xray guidance.
3. Get an injection of joint lubricant into the hip (Orthovisc, Simvisc, ect), again by xray guidance.
4. For severe pain, a narcotic such as vicodin or percocet may help.
5. Finally, surgery entails replacing the hip, called total hip arthroplasty.
6. See an orthopedic surgeon.
