On a 1999 SL2 all it takes is the correct Torx end screwdriver. 1) Open the trunk 2) Remove the 2 Torx head screws on the inside edge of the light assembly 3) Carefully lift up the assembly. Note this process is enough to expose the bulbs (which is why I know how to do it), not sure if you meant futher than this.
remove the torx screws that hold in place, remove the bulbs from sockets
You can access the Nissan taillights from the cargo compartment. Remove the tail light assembly cover. Remove the tail light wiring harness. Remove the tail light assembly retaining bolts.

Remove tail light housing. Remove lamp. Replace lamp. Replace tail light housing.
There are 2 torx screws you need to remove located on the left/right side of the light. You can only see them with the trunk open. Then remove the light assembly. The sockets twist 1/4 a turn and then remove. Replace the light and reinstall assembly

Inside trunk, remove thumb screw to fold back paneling near tail lights. Then remove three thumbscrews and the whole tail light assembly can be moved out to change light bulbs.

Open trunk, there should be a few screws that hold tail light assembly to car. Remove screws and pull tail light assemble straight back.
open the hatch there are two screws remove them and the tail light will come out, after that there are three more screws remove them and you can get to the bulbs to replace them
