Not an easy to get to 'job'! Best from below, on hoist or trolley-jacked then jack stand for safety; it's on the engine block just behind the distributor, 2 bolts 8mm that you'll need small ratchet with small extension to undo. Good luck getting another attached....mongrel of a job!

Firstly, check that the interior roof lamp is working. The smartlock system works off the same circuit, and if the fuse is blown, the car will not have any spark. If that fails to be the issue, test the coil, distributor individually. Coil may have hairline crack, ignition module of distributor may be at fault.

You will need to remove the retaining ring at the top of your 1979 Chevrolet El Camino ignition switch. The ignition switch will slide out. Remove the wiring harness. Reverse the process to install the new ignition switch.
