try using vice grips to hold the nut while you use a wrench on the bolt

Using 6 point sockets or wrenches will help reduce that situation from happening.

How do you get a rounded off nut off?

There are many approaches that can be used on a rounded nut or bolt. Many of them depend on the access you have to the nut. If you have easy access you can try using Vice grips, a pipe wrench, or a hammer and chisel/screwdriver. You may also consider applying heat to the nut or welding another nut to the existing nut if you have the proper equipment. You should put some penetrating oil on the nut, penetrating oils such as liquid wrench help you break the nut loose. Other tools designed specifically for removing rounded nuts include a nut splitter and bolt/nut extractors (See the website at the related link for a discussion on removing a rounded nut with a hammer and screwdriver, cutting tool, penetrating oils and nut extractors.)

How do you take the starter off a 1973 beetle?

Unhook your battery. Reach behind the fan shroud on the right side of the car with a 17mm wrench and feel around until you find the top nut. Try to take it off. If it doesn't come off, keep this in mind. Jack up the car, put jackstands under it, put yourself under it and unhook the battery cable and bendix wire. If you got the top nut completely off, remove the bottom nut, then slip the starter out of the car. If it DIDN'T come off, clamp a set of vise-grips to the bolt at the top of the starter, then crawl out, remove the top nut, crawl back under, remove the bottom nut and take the starter out. If you had to do the vise-grips thing, take the top bolt to a machinist to have a 1/4" bolt welded sideways to the head of the starter bolt. In operation, the bolt welded sideways will hit the transmission case the first time you try tightening the nut to it, it will turn no further, and you can tighten it right up.

With the tool, while they call this a flywheel puller it is a reverse thread nut, with a normal thread bolt in the center. After removing the nut holding on the mag, reverse thread the tool , then tighten the bolt in the center, off comes the mag.

How do you remove rear brake drum from a Renault kangoo van?

once you have removed the hub nut you will need a flat metal plate and a nut & bolt. The plate needs to have 3 holes in it, 1 in the centre and the other 2 to line up with the wheel bolt holes. use 2 wheel bolts to secure the plate to the drum, with the nut & bolt through the centre hole. use the nut & bolt to put tension on the hub shaft then tap the bolt to pull the drum off.

The first step is to remove the manifold. If the bolt is sticking out, remove with a vise grip pliers or stud remover. If broke off flush, drill and extract with an easy out or try to weld a nut to it and turn out that way.

How do you replace a bad tie rod on a 1998 F-150?

By experience, unscrew the nut on the center drag link until off, you may want to mark on the center link where the nut was (if not I hope you have access to an alignment rack); secondly remove cotter pin from top of bolt on the head of the tie rod and remove nut. With the next part you may want use a pry bar or hammer to get the head out. I caution using the hammer as the bolt head may mushroom an not allow you to remove the bolt.

Alot of people confuse stripped with rounded, is the nut rounded so that you cannot turn it with the proper size wrench or are the threads damaged so the nut spins but will not come off?
