On the older cars with studs or rivets holding the moulding to the car, I use strong fishing line. I snake it behind the moulding and snap it off carefully. Wear gloves so you don't hurt your hands....
Use a magnet. If it sticks it's chrome. If not, it's polished aluminum.
Chrome is not attracted by a magnet. However, chromium is used to coat steel and other metals. Those will stick to a magnet even if separated by a thin layer of chrome.

1. Open the hood. 2. Push in center of the clips on right hand side of plastic molding right under front windshield. 3. Remove clips, remove the molding. 4. Unlock the clip on the filter and slide it vertically up. 5. Clean the intake area with a vacuum. 6. Slide in new filter, clip it, install the molding back in place. 7. Make the center pins of the clips to stick up above the clip face, push them in and then lock with push on the pin so it's nice and even. Done.
