I have (2) 2001 Azteks, and have had to do this on both of them. It doesn't have an "SIR Fuse," so I disconnected the battery. I would also recommend buying a genuine AC Delco switch (dealer) and not a remanufactured or "cheap" new one. Made that mistake the first time (cheap new one) and had to replace it shortly after. The "genuine" AC Delco has lasted me 75,000 miles (mine has 203,000 miles on it, the wifes has 154,000 miles). You do get what you pay for in some instances!
Turn wheels to straight ahead position, and then make sure ignition is off.
Remove negative battery cable.
Disable SIR (air bag system) by unhooking the wiring harness to the drivers side (located beneath the dash, you'll have to remove a cover, it should be a yellow connector). The passenger side connector is underneath the seat, same style, same color.
IF you have side impact bags, locate those connectors and unhook them also.
On the underside of the steering wheel, there is a trim cover. You will need a #2 Phillips screwdriver and a torx bit (can't remember which size) to remove the trimcover.
Once you've removed the screws, remove the cover. The Ignition Switch is directly below the ignition lock cylinder. You will need two flatblade screwdrivers.
Depress (at the same time) both retaining screws, the switch will be able to be slid down and out.
Unhook harness, install switch, and replace trim covers.
To arm the SIR system, reconnect harnesses.
Reconnect negative battery cable.
On my 2001 Aztek, I could pull the key out when driving. To change the ignition without removing the steering wheel, take the two screws out from underneath the covering behind the wheel. Not the screws on the steering wheel. The cover will lift up but won't come off. Take an Alleen wrench and feel for the hole on top of the ignition (it will be a tight squeeze), and push in. I should also say remove the black or gray cover on the ignition switch (where the key goes in). Once you find the hole and push down on it, the ignition switch will come out.
