there should be a u shaped clip in the front of the knob, almost like a staple. pry that out with a screwdriver and the knob should pull off.

To remove the console shift knob on the AT 1993 Olds Achieva, first pry the cover from the top of the shift knob. Then, access the single screw inside the cover of the shift knob and turn it counter-clockwise to release the knob.
put your key in the ignition, turn to on position, press down break pedel and shift into gear you want to be in If the car won't start and you have to move it there is a small removable cover on the passenger side of the shifter console. if you remove the cover, you can manually push in a lever that will unlock the shifter so that you can take it out of park.
Remove the four bolts on the cover plate and lift straight up exposing the wiresets.
I am about to attempt this same procedure on my 97 also, according to the Haynes Manual, theres a screw on the parking brake handle that you have to remove, and one on the shifter also, after that its just a bunch of plastic fastners. once you remove the console and the floor panels, its supposedly just held in by 2 clips.

if you dont have a slot on console you have to pop remove the center console plate on top there a release under there
