On my 2001 Aztek, I could pull the key out when driving. To change the ignition without removing the steering wheel, take the two screws out from underneath the covering behind the wheel. Not the screws on the steering wheel. The cover will lift up but won't come off. Take an Alleen wrench and feel for the hole on top of the ignition (it will be a tight squeeze), and push in. I should also say remove the black or gray cover on the ignition switch (where the key goes in). Once you find the hole and push down on it, the ignition switch will come out.
Remove the steering column surround and you should see a black round thing on the left hand side, this is the ignition switch. Remove this and you will see there is one screw holding the ignition barrel on, remove and you then need to insert your key and turn it to the ACC position. you should now be able to withdraw the barrel using the key but take care not to snap the key off in the barrel
1. Disconnect negative battery terminal…..wait 90 seconds for SRS system. 2. Remove steering column cover - 5 screws from the bottom. 3. Disconnect cable connector under steering column area. 4. Remove 1" x 2" cover under ignition switch…this gives you access to the cotter pin which releases the ignition switch. 5. Remove ignition switch rim cover (black 1.5" diameter circular washer like piece) by gently prying it off. 6. Remove clear plastic casing cover by gently prying up the 2 plastic tabs (really small and black) 7. Insert Key into ignition switch and turn to ACC. 8. Now the tough part … look at the replacement part, estimate about how far the pin is from the edge of the ignition switch and insert an ice pick or something like it to depress the cotter pin….if you press it right, not too hard, it will jiggle the ignition switch free and you can remove it by pulling the key and ignition switch out. I stuck my left hand into the area from the steering wheel opening, then guide the ice pick coming up the 1x2" opening to where you feel a little cotter pin hole. 9. Now insert the new ignition switch and enjoy! The part was $130.00 and the local Toyota dealer was charging 220.00 for labor! They charge $105.00/hour for their expert service so that means it should have been about a 2 hour job, I took 3-4 because I didn't know what I was doing and I had to clean my battery terminals first. I could probably do it in 30-45 minutes now.
remove ignition switch and cut yellow wire from switch to passlock modual. ohm resistance off ignition yellow wire(at switch). take that reading to a sterio installation shop and get a resister that matches the risistance or close( .006 ohm lee-way).cut black wire at ignition switch and solder resister to yellow wire going to passlock and black wire to modual and you just bypassed system for good. ignition switch?? ignition module is on distributor, and is under the dist cap, remove the dist cap and rotor bug, it pulls off, then if it was not running you can remove the little black box, its a module, have it checked at autozone for free, take coil off top of dist cap, is as easy as removing the screws, and replacing unit. reassemble it.
when you lift the hood, you will see a black cover at the back far left. remove that cover and you will see a fuse panal. beneath the fuses you will see a black casing about 2 feet long and a foot or so high. You will need to remove that casing and the heater core is inside and to the left. ( i am doing one today) It is alot of work. Be VERY carefull when you handle the casing because it is very brittle from the heat. 94 and older models have a steel casing but 95 and newer have the brittle plastic wannabe casing. They are not interchangable.
First you need to remove the steering wheeel. 2 remove the hazard switch screw, remove the 3 screws holding the turn signal switch, you need to remove the plastic cover below the drivers side to get access to the wires for the turn signal switch unplug the wires for the turn signal switch slide the turn signal switch up no need to remove if. 3 you can get a tool from a parts store to compress the black metal cover it does have a plastic cover over the metal, the tool will screw onto the column then tighten the top of the tool down and this will compress the spring below the black cover, with a couple of small screw drivers you can remove the metal clip that holds the black cover down, with clip removed loosen up the tool remove the tool the clip and the blcck cover. 4 there is a torx screw that holds the lock assm.in remove the screw and the lock assm. will pull out
change the ignition starter switch
Ignition coils are easily accessable on top of the engine. Disconnect the electrical connector, unscrew the bolts (2 per coil, torx T-25), pull the coil straight out. Cylinder numbers are: Pass side, front to back - 1, 3, 5. Driver side, front to back - 2, 4, 6.
It is under the driver side Dash its a black main relay!!!
On this model, the wiper fuse is a circuit breaker in the wiper switch. There is a Blk/lt-grn wire (black light green), that has power from the ignition switch feeding the wiper switch. Check at the switch plug to make sure you have power coming in on this wire when the ignition switch is on. If you need more info, send me a message.
Remove the light sensor and place a switch between the red and black wires. The black wire is one leg of the "hot" pair and the load is connected to the red wire. This will now switch the black hot through the red wire that goes to the load.
